Class 2 skies

A real night sky.

Most Americans have never seen a Bortle 2 sky. From a typical suburb the night sky is rated Class 7 or 8 — you can see maybe 200 stars and the Big Dipper. From a state park, maybe Class 4: 2,000 stars and a hint of the Milky Way. From Headlands on a moonless August night, you are at Class 2: 7,000 visible stars, the Milky Way casts a faint shadow, the Andromeda Galaxy is a smudge to the naked eye.

Emmet County turned the lights off here in 2011 and got it certified as an International Dark Sky Park. There is a 4,000-square-foot event center if it gets cold, an open-air observatory with public scopes, and year-round free programming. Or just bring a blanket and walk down to the beach.
