What is the Sunrise Coast?

Michigan's Sunrise Coast is a 200-mile stretch of Lake Huron shoreline along US-23, running north from Saginaw Bay to the Straits of Mackinac. Seven anchor towns — Tawas, Oscoda, Harrisville, Alpena, Rogers City, Cheboygan, and Mackinaw City — form the region's spine. Locals call it the Sunrise Side because the sun rises over Lake Huron to the east.

Often described as Michigan's "quiet side," the coast pairs sand beaches, more than a dozen lighthouses, the Thunder Bay shipwreck sanctuary, dark-sky parks, and the AuSable River system with a fraction of the summer crowds drawn to the state's western shore. Most travelers spend two to three days basing in Alpena.

A Letter from the Coast

A different kind of Up North.

The west coast of Michigan gets the postcards. The Sunrise Coast gets the morning. Out here, the light comes off the water first — pink at Tawas Point, gold by the time it reaches the river mouth at Oscoda, and white the way the lake gets at noon, all the way north to Mackinaw.

There are smaller crowds, longer beaches, and roads that run for an hour without bending. There are 14 lighthouses still standing watch and at least a hundred shipwrecks below them. Pack a sweater. Bring a thermos. The coast does the rest.

Common questions about the Sunrise Coast.

Quick answers to what travelers ask most before driving Michigan's eastern shore.

Q.01

What is Michigan's Sunrise Coast?

Michigan's Sunrise Coast is a 200-mile stretch of Lake Huron shoreline along US-23, running north from Saginaw Bay to the Straits of Mackinac. Seven anchor towns — Tawas, Oscoda, Harrisville, Alpena, Rogers City, Cheboygan, and Mackinaw City — form the region's spine.

Q.02

Where is Michigan's Sunrise Coast?

The Sunrise Coast is the eastern shore of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, facing Lake Huron. It runs roughly from Standish at the south end (near Bay City and I-75) to Mackinaw City at the Straits of Mackinac, following US-23 north for about 200 miles.

Q.03

Is the Sunrise Coast worth visiting?

Yes — especially for travelers seeking a quieter alternative to Michigan's crowded west coast. The Sunrise Coast offers sand beaches, more than a dozen historic lighthouses, the Thunder Bay shipwreck sanctuary, dark-sky parks, paddling on the AuSable River, and 500,000 acres of public forest with fewer summer crowds.

Q.04

Where should I base for a first Sunrise Coast trip?

Our editors recommend Oscoda — it sits roughly mid-coast at Mile 55, putting Tawas's beaches 25 minutes south and Alpena's shipwreck sanctuary about 50 minutes north. Oscoda also has the AuSable River, the Huron National Forest, and the Lumberman's Monument scenic drive at its doorstep. Alpena, the largest town on the coast, is the strongest alternative if your trip centers on the Thunder Bay shipwrecks.

Q.05

How many days do I need to visit the Sunrise Coast?

Most travelers spend two to three days driving the Sunrise Coast. The full 200-mile route takes about four hours of driving, but a long weekend allows time to base in Oscoda, paddle the AuSable, drive River Road, and take a day trip to Alpena for the glass-bottom shipwreck tour.

Q.06

What is the best month to visit the Sunrise Coast?

July is the warmest month for Lake Huron swimming and is also the heart of festival season, including the Alpena Brown Trout Festival. September delivers fall color and quieter trails. Winter, December through March, is the peak season for snowmobiling and ice fishing across the region's interior forests.

Q.07

What are the best things to do on the Sunrise Coast?

Top activities include visiting historic lighthouses, taking a glass-bottom shipwreck tour in Alpena's Thunder Bay sanctuary, paddling the AuSable River, swimming at Tawas Point, stargazing at Headlands International Dark Sky Park, and driving the US-23 Heritage Route in the fall for color.
